With over 30 years as a Cathedral Organist, David is now widely recognised for his two settings of the Eucharist- the St. Thomas and the Trinity Mass. Both contain strong melodic writing and a harmonic strength which are of wide appeal to both choirs and congregations alike, eminently singable and sensitive to the liturgy. His anthems and arrangements reflect a similar style enhancing the nature of the text.
David Thorne is an accomplished Musician, Composer, Arranger and Teacher whose career has included composing and arranging music for the visit of the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu and performing in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
He has been a regular contributor to Television and Radio making his first appearance on the BBC’s World Service at the age of 15 accompanying Exeter Cathedral Choir. He directed the choir and congregation on ITV’s “Dial a Hymn” from Portsmouth Cathedral in 1989, and was a regular contributor on Radio 4’s “Daily Service” and “Sunday Half Hour” for many years.
David is widely recognised for his composing and arranging skills and has recently composed a number of pieces for Oxford University Press in the series ‘Hymn Settings for Organists’. His Mass of St. Thomas is performed in churches throughout the United Kingdom and further afield. In 2009, David composed a sequel, the Trinity Mass. As well as composing, David is an accomplished Organist having played and directed in both Portsmouth Cathedrals over a span of 30 years. He has also directed and accompanied professional and amateur groups.
